At age 35yrs I was faced with my greatest challenge ‘How will I earn a living now?

 

For the past 20 years I enjoyed my dream job, playing football, physical training, team work, media attention, travelling the world and playing a lot of golf!

 

Leaving school to join Wolves at 15 yrs meant no qualifications and in those days Clubs didn’t encourage their young players to study. I sat down with my wife and made a list of the skills I used in football. Looking at this in depth I realised it wasn’t just my feet! Dedication, ability, vision, timing, confidence, courage, entertaining and team work.

 

Scanning the local newspaper I saw an advertisement for ‘ Sales Assistant’-Sports minded person required. I applied and got the job in Beatties Department Store in Wolverhampton. It felt very alien standing around adjusting the stock but I enjoyed the customer relations and the selling came easy. I was there a couple of months when I realised I could do this on a bigger scale. I became a Sales Rep for electrical and timber companies before joining Carlsberg Tetley where I received fantastic training in the drinks industry. Product knowledge, negotiating skills and customer relations, now I could sell! It was very competitive being part of a sales team and I thrived on the challenge. I became obsessed with the stats chart and it wasn’t long before I earned ‘Salesman of the Year Award’. I still work 3 days a week selling products for a local Janitorial Company.

 

I missed entertaining though, Molineux , Maine Road, Old Trafford, The Berbabau.. fantastic stadiums with great atmosphere. The rush of adrenalin walking into such arenas was exhilarating!

 

I was invited to do local Radio commentaries on Saturday afternoons at WABC in Wolverhampton with a fellow Yorkshire man ‘Phil Dixon’ alias The Prof (He was the clever one – he had been on University Challenge!) This proved to be a great success. Phil suggested I should compile my experiences into an After Dinner speech as I certainly had the confidence to deliver it professionally. I sat down with my wife Lyn and within a month I was on my feet performing!

 

Over the past 9 years ‘Steve Daley Ltd’ is proving to be very successful, I now travel all over the country entertaining audiences with my speech. I am available for Luncheons, Dinners, Motivational Presentations, Corporate Hospitality, Award Evenings and Q & A’s.
